How to write an affiliate review you can stand behind

You do not need to invent firsthand experience. Explain what is verifiable, identify merchant claims as claims, evaluate fit, surface limitations, and disclose your commercial relationship.

Disclose what you actually inspected

A public-materials review can be useful if it names its evidence and limitations. It should not pretend to be a hands-on test.

Explain the intended user

Identify the problem the product is meant to solve and the circumstances where it may be unsuitable.

Evaluate concrete dimensions

Consider functionality, onboarding, support, integrations, total cost, portability, and merchant terms where evidence exists.

Separate claims from findings

‘The merchant says’ is not equivalent to independent verification. Link to primary sources for unstable details.

Give a usable conclusion

Summarize who should investigate further, what remains unknown, and which terms to verify before purchasing.

A worked example

If you have only read public documentation for a course, say so in the review. Explain the published curriculum, identify unknown support or software costs, and provide a checklist for verifying checkout terms. Do not write ‘I tried it’ or assign a numerical rating without actual evidence and a defined method.

Start with an evidence table

For each factual product statement, record the claim, source URL, date checked, and whether it is a merchant assertion or something you independently observed. Keep unknowns visible. If you did not use a product, do not write a first-person review that implies you did.

Choose the right format

A tutorial needs ordered steps and a concrete example. A review needs product-specific evidence, limitations, and fit. A comparison needs shared criteria and meaningful differences. A glossary needs concise definitions. Repeating the same general affiliate advice in all four formats leaves the reader’s actual question unanswered.

Review for usefulness

After drafting, remove unsupported superlatives and generic claims. Check that the opening answers the query, examples match the audience, headings follow a sensible sequence, and related links offer a genuine next step. Recheck unstable merchant details before updating the publication date.

A practical next step

Choose one idea from this guide, apply it to a real audience or offer, and record what you learn before adding another tool or publishing another page.
